If your baby starts to nod off while feeding at chest/breast, this simple trick of breast/chest compressions may help baby feed more actively and increase their milk intake.

  • Support your breast/chest with one hand—thumb on one side and fingers on the other.

  • Wait while your baby breastfeeds actively, jaw moving all the way to ear. When you notice swallowing stops, compress your breast with a gentle firm squeeze then release, until they start nursing actively, then release your hand.

  • Rotate around your breast/chest and repeat as needed.

  • When the compressions seem to no longer work, try putting baby on the other side and starting the process again.
